Medha.id. In the four years since it opened, Alila Seminyak has become recognised as a barometer of a sustainable property, thanks to implementing numerous sustainability initiatives and continuously innovating ideas to preserve the environment and local community.

As part of its ongoing responsibility to the environment, Alila Seminyak has now introduced its own hydroponic garden, in which it grows its own organic ingredients using hydroponics, a method of growing plants in a water-based solution without soil.

Compared to soil-based gardening, the hydroponic system allows gardening to take place in limited spaces. Furthermore, this system is water-saving as the plant roots will only take up as much water as they need, while the excess is recirculated to the other plants in the system. It also provides total control over the plant nutrients and growth rate.

The produce of the hydroponic garden is used in Alila Seminyak’s own day-to-day operational needs, mainly as ingredients in the dishes offered at the resort’s main restaurant, Seasalt. Selected ingredients are also picked from the hydroponic garden to concoct Seasalt’s sustainable, ocean-inspired cocktails.

To complete the eco cycle, treated waste water is used to water the plants in the garden and around the resort – all part of Alila Seminyak’s efforts to minimize its impact on the environment, and exemplifying Alila’s commitment to eco-sustainability.
